Takahē puppets

Takahē chicks in older captive rearing program, with puppet.

Takahē chicks were once part of captive rearing programmes. They were fed by hand-held puppets that played sounds of adult contact calls. Fibreglass ‘mums’ were placed in the sleeping areas. These sculptures also had speakers playing contact calls. These methods were not used after 2011.
