Kobold

1863 illustration of a Kobold German small, goblin-like creature

In German folklore, the kobold is a small, goblin-like creature with a short temper and mischievous spirit. German miners named cobalt after the kobold, which they blamed for the ‘unknown’ substance in silver ore that caused toxic fumes and stopped them being able to extract the silver.
