Infrared image of kelp

This is a false colour image where infrared light reflected by photosynthetic material is captured by the multispectral camera. This infrared light is represented by the visible colour red and shows where kelp and seaweed are located. However, because infrared light is highly absorbed by water, kelp more than 1 m below the surface does not reflect infrared light back to the surface, so only kelp above the water or very close to the water surface can be observed in these wavelengths.
