Teachers using the Hub – One website, many uses

In this online PD session recorded on 10 September 2015, middle school teacher Greta Dromgool talks about the Science Learning Hub’s resources and how she has used them to excite and explore science with her year 7 to 9 students.

A highlight has been how she has used the resources to develop her students’ science observation skills.

Greta also shares how she adapted the student activity Extracting DNA (previously called Introduction to DNA), using kiwifruit and bananas (not just tomato) from which to extract DNA. Greta found that the Label the heart interactive has saved her from bringing in lots of sheep’s hearts for dissection and added a richness of learning for her students!

This PLD webinar includes footage from the old legacy Science Learning Hub but all the resources referenced in this session are available on this website.

  • PowerPoint presentation

  • index for the PowerPoint and video.

It's really good to see how resources are used in the classroom. I like what you've done with them and how you adapted them for your students’ needs. Really practical ideas.

Nature of science

Making observations is a core skill when investigating in science. Scientific investigations begin with one or more key observations that create curiosity and questions, and these lead to investigations and new scientific discoveries.

Update

We are very happy that Greta now manages the Science Learning Professional learning development webinars and helps develop content too. Contact us if you have any ideas or requests for PLD, we'd love to hear from you.
