Topic planner: Soil theme – Is all soil the same?

This topic planner offers suggested pathways through some of the soils resources on the Science Learning Hub and makes links with the NZ Soils website.

3 Soils: Te Rapa peaty, Bruntwood silt loam, Egmont black loam.

Soils are not all the same

Soils can differ widely from location to location. Soil colour depends on organic matter and mineral content and is influenced by drainage. These soils are Te Rapa peaty, Bruntwood silt loam and Egmont black loam.

The topic planner focuses on the following questions:

  • What makes one landscape different from another?

  • How is soil formed?

  • What types of soils are there in my area?

The topic planner can be used to create your own personalised teaching unit, and the material can be used in any combination or order. It can also be used to help plan pre/post-activities if your class is going on a soil-themed field trip.
