New Zealand – a special place for science

Dr Katja Riedel of NIWA explains why she thinks New Zealand stands out for conducting her research and offering scientists unique opportunities.

DR KATJA RIEDEL
New Zealand has a quite big capability in science, so we are probably a nice quirky group, and we have a few US collaborators who picked us because nobody else could do the research that they wanted us to do. So I think New Zealand has a very high profile in research in some special areas, and that which is known in the world as well, and that is why US scientists want to work with New Zealand scientists together.

And the other thing is also that we have a very close proximity to Antarctica. If you want to work on ice cores you can get the ice core from Antarctica to here within a day, which is unheard for other nations.
