The research ship JOIDES Resolution

Aliki Weststrate, Outreach Officer aboard JOIDES Resolution, uses a LEGO model to tell us about the research ship.

The video is part of a ship to shore Skype interview with Otumoetai Intermediate School. As Aliki explains, the video footage was bounced off a satellite, which affects the sound and picture quality.

ALIKI WESTSTRATE

I’m just going to tell you a little bit more about the boat, and I am going to show you a LEGO model of the boat that my son made. He made me a model of the JOIDES Resolution.

So this is the drill tower that you are going to see when we go outside. Here, this is where all the labs are. Once the drill pipe has pulled the core up, we cut it into small sections and we carry it very carefully into the lab, and then they start testing it and trying to work out what kind of sediment it is and what’s in it.

We have a helipad. We don’t have a helicopter, unfortunately, but if someone got really injured on board the ship, we could get a helicopter here.

This is the satellite, so the message right now is going up to a geostationary satellite and then bouncing down to your intermediate right now. So that’s why we have a bit of a delay. We haven’t got fibre optic cables like you do on land.

And this little orange thing is a lifeboat. We have four lifeboats on the ship, we’ve got 130 people – 35 of them are scientists, 55 ship crew – electricians, the captain, the doctor, the drillers, plumbers, mechanics. We have a whole range of people, so we need four lifeboats.

And these are our Co-chiefs. So these are the two scientists, so we’ve got Dr Laura Wallace and Dr Demian Saffer.
